What Determines the Cost of a 3D-Printed Part?
A small part is not always a simple project. A useful quote separates the work needed to create a printable design from the work needed to manufacture and check it.

Section 01
Separate a new design from a repeat print
First identify what you already have. A sketch, a scanned object and an approved production file represent different starting points. A quote based on a photograph may need measurement and design time before any printing begins. A repeat order can reuse an approved revision, provided the material and requirements remain the same.
Ask for separate lines for design, the first sample and repeat units. That makes it easier to understand which costs recur and which belong to development. Confirm whether editable design files, printable files or both are included in the handover.

Material weight is only one input
Prusa’s pricing calculator considers print time and filament use, together with other operating costs. This is a useful reminder that a price per gram cannot describe every job. A tall part with a fine finish may occupy a machine for longer than another part of similar weight.
When requesting a comparison, keep the file revision, material, quantity and acceptance requirements consistent. Ask whether support removal, inserts, assembly and inspection are included. A lower total can reflect a different scope rather than a more efficient process.

Agree on the features that must work
Manufacturing orientation and supported geometry affect how a model can be printed. Prusa’s modeling guidance discusses designing around the process. For a Carras project, turn that into an explicit list of critical interfaces: a board must fit, a connector must remain accessible or a lid must close with the selected fasteners.
Consider testing only the uncertain interface first. A small fit sample can answer a dimensional question before committing to a complete enclosure. This is a project-planning suggestion, not a promise that every design will need fewer iterations.

Use a quote comparison checklist
Send the same brief to each supplier. Record what is included before comparing the final number. The checklist below is a suggested structure; it is not a Carras price list.
- Input: file revision, units, dimensions and permission to reproduce the design.
- Development: measurement, modeling, first sample and included revisions.
- Production: material, color, quantity, finish and assembly.
- Acceptance: the dimensions or fit checks used to accept the result.
- Delivery: target date, packaging, shipping and any applicable taxes.
- Handover: editable files, printable files and instructions included in the project.
Section 05
Compare a pilot with a repeat order
For example, a proposed enclosure project could start with one fit sample, then a short batch after approval. The first stage answers a design question; the second reproduces an agreed version. Keep these stages separate so a design change does not silently change the assumptions behind the batch quote.
Before placing an order, agree how changes and failed acceptance checks are handled. Surface appearance, strength, heat resistance and exposure requirements should be specified for the intended use rather than inferred from a render.
