How to Plan a Functional 3D-Printed Part

A successful print starts with the job the part must do. Clear measurements and operating conditions help turn an idea into a testable design and a useful quote.

Section 01

Describe the job before choosing the shape

Explain what the part holds, connects, protects or positions. Include photographs of the location and components, plus a simple sketch showing the important dimensions. A mount inside a dry room and an enclosure exposed to sunlight have different requirements.

Identify what can change and what cannot: existing screw positions, the space available, the connector location or a surface that must remain accessible. These constraints help determine whether to adapt an existing model or develop a new one.

Measure the assembly, not just the board

For an electronics enclosure, measure the complete arrangement with connectors and cables attached. Include room to bend cables, access buttons, secure the board and open the housing for service. Consider the antenna location before deciding where fasteners and walls should go.

A nominal dimension is not a finished fit. Holes, mating surfaces and lids may need planned clearances and a physical test. A small sample of the critical connection can be more useful than printing the entire enclosure immediately.

  • Overall dimensions and maximum available space
  • Mounting holes and fastener requirements
  • Connector, cable and maintenance access
  • The fit or movement that the first prototype must demonstrate

Section 03

Choose material and construction for the environment

Discuss temperature, moisture, sunlight, contact with chemicals and expected mechanical loads. Material choice, wall layout and print orientation all affect the result. Avoid assuming that a decorative print and a functional mount can use the same approach.

Specify whether the part is a visual sample, a fit prototype or intended for a defined working use. An enclosure does not have a weatherproof rating simply because it is closed; seals, connections and testing matter. Any required rating must be addressed explicitly.

Use iterations to answer a question

The first version should resolve a specific uncertainty: does the lid close, is the grip comfortable, can the sensor see the target, or can the board be removed? Record the result and change only what the next iteration needs.

Agree on the number of revisions and what is included in each. Keep the model version linked to the physical sample so later prints use the correct dimensions. If you already have an STL or 3MF, include its intended units and the measurements that must be checked.

Prepare a quote-ready request

Send the use case, measurements, available files, quantity and target date. Explain whether you need design work, printing only, assembly checks or integration with electronics. Include any finish, color or handover-file requirements that affect the scope.
